[긍정적으로 잘못 평가되는 인물의 결함을 통한 유머]


  「립 밴 윙클」이 주는 유머는 긍정적으로 ‘잘못 평가’되고 있는 인물의 ‘결함’에 있다. 립 밴 윙클은 얼핏 긍정적인 인물인 듯 보이지만, 소설을 읽을수록 독자는 이 인물이 가진 결함을 알게 된다. 그래서 그의 결함을 알게 된 독자는 립 밴 윙클의 결함 그 자체, 화자가 립 밴 윙클의 결함을 드러내기 위해 사용하는 표현, 상황의 아이러니, 그것을 알지 못하는 다른 등장인물들의 어리석음 등을 통하여 재미를 얻는다. 

  타인이 판단하는 립 밴 윙클은 어떠한가. 그는 ‘소박하고 마음씨 좋은 사나이며, 이웃에게 친절하였다.‘ ’마을의 어린애들도 또한 그가 다가오면 환성을 올리면서 맞이하곤 했다.‘ ‘마을 어디에서도, 심지어 개조차 그를 보고 짖어대려 하지 않을 지경이었다.’ 라는 내용에서 알 수 있듯 매우 긍정적이고 과장되게 평가되어 있다. 사실 이 과장이야 말로 뒤에 이어질 전혀 다른 실상을 예고하는 복선이다.

  그렇다면 타인의 평가와 달리 실제로의 립 밴 윙클은 어떠한가. 그는 무책임하고 게으르며 나태한 인간이다. 그는 우유부단하고 세상을 쉽게 살아가려고 하는 인물일 뿐이다. 소설은 그가 이러한 인물임을 반복해서 드러낸다. 특히 립 밴 윙클 소유의 농장과 아이들의 모습에 대한 묘사는 그의 부정적인 속성이 확실하게 가시화 된 것이라 볼 수 있으며, 20년 후에 다시 만난 게으르고 남루한 차림의 아들은 그의 결함의 결과물이다.

  이러한 립 밴 윙클에 대한 화자의 태도는 소설 속 다른 등장인물들이 내리는 긍정적인 평가를 따라가는 듯 보인다. 그러나 자세히 살펴보면 화자는 립 밴 윙클을 비꼬고 우스꽝스럽게 그리고, 반어적인 표현을 함으로써 그에 대한 비난의 태도를 숨기지 않는다. 예를 들어, 낚시를 하거나 사냥을 하는 그의 모습을 두고 ‘그에게 인내심이나 부지런함이 없다고 할 수는 없다.‘ 라고 화자는 평가하고 있지만, 그가 낚시를 하거나 사냥을 하는 모습이 묘사된 부분을 읽고 있노라면 그가 얼마나 시시한 일에 쓸데없이 시간을 낭비하는지 알 수 있다. 독자는 화자가 립 밴 윙클의 부정적인 면을 드러내기 위해 이렇게 비틀어 표현하는 데서 유머를 느낀다.

  이 소설 속 등장인물 중 립 밴 윙클의 실상을 제대로 파악하고 있는 인물이 있는데, 바로 그의 아내이다. 그러나 그녀는 마을 아낙네들에 의하여 립 밴 윙클 집안의 다툼의 원인으로 간주되며 립 밴 윙클과 대조되어 부정적인, 드센 인물로 그려진다. 이러한 마을 사람들의 평가야 말로 잘못된 평가이며, 그들이 그러한 사실을 전혀 인지하지 못하고 있다는 데에서도 아이러니와 유머가 생긴다.

  실제적 인식을 하는 아내는 끊임없이 잔소리를 해 대지만, 립 밴 윙클은 이에 대하여 회피하는 태도로 일관한다. 이 비겁한 태도는 그가 하룻밤 사이에 20년을 훌쩍 보내고 아내의 페티코트 정부 아래서 벗어나는 데서 절정을 맞이한다. 그는 너무나도 손쉽게 집에서 할 일도 없고, 이제는 게으름을 피워도 책망할 사람 하나 없는 행복한 나이가 된 것이다. 20년이나 허비하고 이것에 행복을 느끼는 립 밴 윙클의 태도에 우리는 어이없는 웃음을 짓지 않을 수 없다.

  20년이 지나 그가 되돌아 온 마을, 혹은 세상은 겉으로는 많은 것이 변한 듯 보인다. 그러나 사람들의 인식의 한계는 여전하다. 젊은이들이나 마을 원로로서 그를 존경하는 사람들은, 새로운 세대에 살고 있다 자처하면서도 대상의 실체를 알지 못하는 인간의 어리석음을 여전히 지니고 있다. 20년이란 긴 시간 동안 사회와 제도는 변하였지만 본질적인 인식의 성숙은 이루지 못한 것이다.

  「립 밴 윙클」은 이렇게 주인공 성격의 결함을 파헤치며 그와 관련된 사건과 주변 인물들의 태도를 통하여 재미를 줄 뿐만 아니라, 소설 외부에 존재하는 독자에게 비판적 인식의 가능성을 제공한다.

'미문학 개관' 수업 시간에 작성한 에세이 3번째. 2008년이었던 것으로 기억한다. 이 수업을 선택한 것은 이것이 논문중심 전공강의였기 때문에 중간 기말이 없고 총 네번의 에세이로 대체했다는 것. 참 좋아했던 수업이었다. A4 몇 장 밖에 안되는 단편들을 가지고 한장 반짜리 에세이를 쓴다는 것이 부담스럽긴 했으나, 짧은 단편들도 열심히 파 보면 무언가 쓸거리가 무궁무진하게 생긴다는 것이 신기했었달까.

Humor Through the Flaws of a Positively Misjudged Character

The humor in Rip Van Winkle lies in the protagonist’s "flaws," which are "misjudged" in a positive light. At first glance, Rip Van Winkle seems like a good-natured character, but as the story unfolds, readers come to recognize his shortcomings. This realization allows readers to find amusement in his flaws themselves, the narrator’s expressions that highlight them, the irony of various situations, and the foolishness of other characters who remain oblivious to them.

 

How do others perceive Rip Van Winkle? He is described as "a simple, good-natured fellow" who was "kind to his neighbors," and even the village children "would shout with joy whenever he approached." "No one in the village, not even the dogs, ever barked at him." These descriptions portray him in an overly positive and exaggerated manner. However, this exaggeration serves as foreshadowing, hinting at a completely different reality.

 

Contrary to the perception of others, what is Rip Van Winkle truly like? He is an irresponsible, lazy, and idle man. He is indecisive and seeks to drift through life effortlessly. The story repeatedly emphasizes these traits, particularly through descriptions of his neglected farm and unruly children. His ragged, lazy son, whom he meets twenty years later, serves as the ultimate embodiment of his shortcomings.

 

The narrator’s attitude toward Rip Van Winkle appears to align with the positive evaluations of other characters in the story. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that the narrator ridicules and satirizes Rip Van Winkle, using irony to express implicit criticism. For instance, when describing Rip’s love for fishing and hunting, the narrator remarks, "One could not say he lacked patience or diligence." Yet, the actual depictions of him engaged in these activities reveal how much time he wastes on trivial pursuits. Readers find humor in the way the narrator twists his words to highlight Rip Van Winkle’s flaws.

 

Among all the characters, only Rip Van Winkle’s wife accurately perceives his true nature. However, she is portrayed as a domineering and quarrelsome woman, in stark contrast to Rip, and is blamed by the village women for the conflicts in their household. This negative portrayal of Rip’s wife, in contrast to the misplaced admiration for Rip himself, represents an ironic and misguided judgment on the part of the villagers, adding to the humor of the story.

 

Rip’s wife persistently scolds him, but he chooses to evade responsibility rather than confront her criticisms. This cowardly attitude reaches its peak when he skips twenty years overnight and conveniently escapes from his wife's authority. Having returned home to find no responsibilities and no one to reprimand him for his laziness, Rip Van Winkle finds himself in an absurdly ideal situation. Readers cannot help but laugh at the ridiculousness of a man who wastes twenty years of his life and yet finds happiness in his newfound freedom.

 

The village, or rather the world, that Rip Van Winkle returns to after twenty years appears to have changed significantly on the surface. However, people’s capacity for judgment remains as limited as ever. The young and the old alike, despite considering themselves part of a new generation, continue to misunderstand and misjudge others, demonstrating the persistent foolishness of humankind. Though society and its institutions may evolve over twenty years, the fundamental maturity of human perception remains stagnant.

 

By exploring the flaws of its protagonist and examining the attitudes of those around him, Rip Van Winkle not only provides entertainment but also encourages critical awareness in its readers.

This was my third essay for the Introduction to American Literature class, written in what I believe was 2008. I chose this class because, as a research-based course, it replaced midterms and finals with four essays—something I greatly appreciated. Writing one-and-a-half-page essays on short stories was challenging, yet I found it fascinating how even the shortest stories could reveal an endless amount of material upon closer analysis.
